Ian MacLean was born in Invercargill, New Zealand on 20 October 1919[1].
He attended Scotch College in Melbourne, Victoria from 1931 to 1937[2].
Ian was appointed Archives Officer for the Commonwealth National Library on 30 October, 1944. In 1961, the Commonwealth Archives Office became a separate authority, and Ian continued as Chief Archives Officer until 1968.
Ian was made a Member of the Order of Australia on 26 January 1996 "for service to the inauguration of the system of Australian archives and to the development of the archival profession"[3].
Ian died on 26 February 2003.
