He married Margaret Mcmillan.^[1]

They lived in Ontario.^[2][3]

At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, John, Margaret, Neil, Margaret, Archibald, Ethel, Duncan, and Janet MacKay (enumerated as "McKay") were listed as living in Chesley, Ontario^[4].
