Biography

Captain Angus MacDonald was Quartermaster in the company commanded by Major John Small.[1]

From Mabou Pioneers, Volume 1:[2]

The MacDonalds of Tulloch are descended from Angus MacDonald, second son of "Iain Dubh" of Bohuntin, Scotland. Angus MacDonald, VII of Tulloch, was born in Tulloch, Scotland in October 1759. He followed a military career, belonging to the 84th Regiment. He fought in the American War of 1812-1814 and was apparently in the Southern Army, probably in New York or Boston. He returned from there previous to the time when the regiment was disbanded. He was reported in 1828 as being deceased, his rank at that time ,being Ensign Quartermaster.

From J L MacDougall's History of Inverness County, Nova Scotia:[3]

The Tullochs of Inverness County are from Captain Angus Tulloch MacDonald and his wife, a daughter of MacDonald of Killiechonate, a family descended from Donald Glas VI of Keppoch. Captain Tulloch and his brother-in-law of Killiechonate "An-t-Oifigeach Dhu" gallantly distinguished themselves at the capture of Louisburg in 1758 and were handsomely pensioned by the British Government. Captain Tulloch's family were:

  • Ronald who emigrated to Prince Edward Island
  • Angus, who emigrated from Lochaber, Scotland, in 1807 and settled at Lake Ainslie. He married Mary daughter of Allan MacDonald of Broad Cove Banks with issue five sons and three daughters.
  • Margaret who married Donald MacDonald (An-t-Saoir) of Bohuntin, Scotland.
  • Mary who married John Beaton of Mabou Mines.
  • Another daughter who married Andrew Mc-Innis of Mabou Mines from whom the family of the late Hugh Mac-Eachern (Eoghan Dhu) of Judique and several families in Prince Edward Island.

From The Clan Donald, Volume III:[4]

Angus MacDonald, VII of Tulloch, married a daughter of MacDonald of Aberarder and had:

  • Ranald, who emigrated to America. His male heirs, if any exist, are not known.
  • Grace, who married a Mr. MacIntyre, with issue, and went to Australia

From Gaelic Cape Breton Step-Dancing:[5]

Captain Angus MacDonald (1759-<1828) procured an ensigncy in the 84th Royal Highland Emigrants, saw action in North America, married in 1783, and fathered six children. His first wife was his cousin Margaret MacDonald, daughter of Ronald "Mor" MacDonald of Aberarder. His daughters were:

  • Margaret, who married Donald "The Carpenter" MacDonald
  • Isabella, who married Andrew MacInnis
  • Mary, who married John Beaton (b. 1794) in 1819

Research Notes

How could he have "gallantly distinguished" himself at the capture of Louisburg in 1758 when he was born in 1759?
