Biography
In 1862, the Auckland Post Office requested that the writer of a letter addressed to Mr. Joshua Lyes, Shoalhaven, N.S.W. pick up this returned mail. [1]
He was born in Australia in 1863. [2]
In 1867 his father, Joshua Lyes took up Block 27 (Now Irishtown) on the Thames Gold Fields. [3] His father has a place in history as one of the Thames Pioneers of 1867. [4]
He married Jane Elizabeth Herivel in 1889 [5]
Joshua Lyes made his home in Crosbie's Settlement, now part of Coromandel Forest Park. [6]
He passed away at his home in Irishtown in 1934 age 71 [7] [8]

- MR. JOSHUA LYES.
- The death occurred to-day of Mr. Joshua Lyes, aged 71, an old resident of Thames. Born in Australia, he came to Thames 68 years ago. He worked on most parts of the goldmines field. Mr. Lyes is survived by his wife, three sons and five daughters, Mesdames H. B. Chalton and H. Brown (Thames), F. Nettlingham (Aongatete), and Misses M and E. Lyes, of Thames. . The sons are Charles (New South Wales), Joshua (Waitakaruru), and Harold (Matatoki)

Research Note
Was he the brother of Esther Lyes, who married Jane Herivel's brother John Philpott Greenwich Herivel in 1885? It seems likely. If so, he was the son of Esther and John Lyes
