"John WInters Lusk Sr, a real pioneer, came to Utah in 1852. Settled in Provo, Utah; then removed to Wellsville, Cache Col, Utah where four of his children were born. In 1864 went to Perry, Box Elder Co., Utah. He had intended to go to Dixie in Southern Utah; but winter had set in and he remained at Perry, Utah. He had many horses, sheep and cattle. There was no range for his stock so he removed to Malad, Oneida Co., Idaho in 1866 where he remained until his death. They took the wool carded and spun it and made clothing. Mother Esther Catherine Parke Lusk was a weaver. John W. Lusk had two families. They lived in a dugout and two covered wagons the first summer after coming to Malad. In the fall of 1866 he built a two room log house. The roof was made of willows and straw with dirt on top. Their first night in the house Esther Catherine (Park) Lusk gave birth to a baby boy whose name was David; he died when 13 years of age. They lived in this home for some time and then he built a house of two log rooms on the corner, a block away from the home of Esther for his other wife Martha and between the two homes were his stables and other buildings. In later years he took a quarter section of land six miles north of Malad. Esther and Martha, his wives, took turns each summer in living on the farm. On 22 April 1882 Martha Tidwell Lusk died at the age of 40. Esther then cared for the two families of ten children, the others being married. They prospered from this time on until death came to mother Esther Catherine Park Lusk. She died 29 October 1893. This was the most trying time of John Winters Lusk's life with the mother dead and five children to raise."
