Biography

Jesse Lunsford served in the United States Army in World War I
Service started: April 1917
Unit(s): Company G, 120th Infantry Regiment
Service ended: 5 Oct 1918

Jesse, born July 25, 1895, was the son of Willie A. Lunsford and Ollie Alice Clayton.

He is listed as a member of his father’s household in the 1900 census[1]

World War I Hero

Jesse served with distinction in World War I. His draft registration card, dated June, 1917, states he was a self-employed farmer in Person county, North Carolina.[2]
During 1916-17 he served in Co. C 316th MG Battalion and after that in Co. G 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Div, A.E.F.[3] He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his action on September 29, 1918.[4]
The citation reads:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Jesse Lunsford, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Bellicourt, France, September 29, 1918. Corporal Lunsford attacked, single handed, a machine-gun post from which a destructive fire was being directed against his company. While he was approaching the nest the machine-gun shot the butt off his rifle and cut a hole in his breeches, but he succeeded in getting close enough to the nest to throw four hand grenades into it and then killed the gunner with his bayonet.

He never married.

The 1940 U.S. Census reveals he resides in his widow mother’s household.[5]

Jessee died on November 1, 1972 in Roxboro, North Carolina.[6] He is buried in the Nathan Lunsford Family Cemetery, Person county, North Carolina - Find A Grave: Memorial #20828601 retrieved August 26, 2021
