Jane (Lundie) Bonar is Notable.

Jane Bonar was a Scottish hymnwriter. Her hymn, Pass away, earthly joy!, first appeared in 1843 in Songs for the Wilderness. Bonar’s poetry possessed a deep spirituality of tone. In her gravest mood, there was a hopeful, submissive glint of piety.

Born Jane Catherine Lundie on 1st December 1821 in the old manse by the River Tweed, located by the Abbey, Kelso, Scotland. She was a daughter of Robert Lundie, minister of Kelso, and Mary Grey,[1] a native of Northumberland. Her paternal grandfather, Cornelius Lundie, had also been minister of Kelso. With her widowed mother, her elder sister, Mary Duncan, and brother, she removed to Edinburgh in Autumn 1832. In 1835, she was sent to a school in London. She also spent time with Mary at the manse in Cleish, until 1840, when Mary, a poet and memoirist, died.

In 1843, Jane married Reverend Horatius Bonar[2], becoming the first Free Church minister’s wife. Upon their marriage, she became the mistress of the manse of Kelso. Five of their young children died in succession. Towards the end of their lives, one of their surviving daughters was left a widow with five small children and she returned to live with her parents.

The couple had nine children:

  1. Mary Lundie Bonar (baptised Kelso 29 July 1844)[3]
  2. An un-named daughter (died in infancy)[4]
  3. Marjory Emily J Bonar (baptised Kelso 30 September 1849)[5]
  4. Christina Cornelia Bonar (baptised Kelso 28 November 1852; died Edinburgh 1869))[6][7][8]
  5. Lucy Jane Bonar (baptised Kelso 5 November 1854; d Edinburgh 1858)[9][10]
  6. Eliza Maitland Bonar (born Kelso 10 September 1857)[11]
  7. Horatius Niman Bonar (born Kelso 2 April 1860)[12]
  8. Emily Florence Bonar (born Kelso 26 December 1861)[13]
  9. Henry Robert Bonar (born Kelso 17 December 1865; died Edinburgh 1869))[14][15]

Jane is remembered as last saying, "He giveth me salvation."

With health never very strong, Jane often wore herself out for others. She passed away at Edinburgh on 3rd December 1884.[16] “He giveth me salvation,” were among her last words. Horatius passed away five years later. They are buried together in the Canongate Kirkyard in the lair of Alexander Bonar (and his parents), near the bottom of the eastern extension.
