Lukens George Washington Lukens was born near Nashville, Kansas, in a sod house on May 14, 1887. While still a boy, he and his father, Marion, hauled gypsum from the quarry on the Warwick place. When George was grown, he rented a farm southeast of Medicine Lodge, and was living there when he married MABEL CLARA GARTEN on April 7, 1912. George and Mabel were married in a double ceremony with the CLAUDE GARTEN'S. George and Mabel had seven children: Marian Clare, James Earl, Georgia Aline, Ralph Landon, Dale Guy, Anna Louise, and Billy Frank. When Billy was only two weeks old, their mother died. George was left to raise his family with the help of the older children. George's sister, Lucy, took Billy and kept him for several years. Several neighbor women helped from time to time. The two oldest children soon left school to help out. Marian took charge of the house, a big job for a young girl. Jimmie helped his dad. The other children all helped in the house and with the farm work. They were all quite experienced in field work and driving a team. While quite young, Ralph didn't come home for supper, one evening. Someone went to look for him and found him sitting in the pasture gate, leaning on a post and sound asleep. He turned out his team, sat down and went to sleep. In the summer of 1927, George built a large now home for his family. It was a beautiful home and Anna was overheard telling a visitor to be sure and wipe his feet, as they had just polished the floor! The house featured a large living room where many a Saturday night dance was held. Until 1936, George and his children did all the farmwork on their 500-600 acres with mules and horses. Between 24 and 36 head were kept at all times. The children all drove teams from the time they were five or six years old. George W. Lukens passed away on December 25, 1966, leaving behind seven children and twenty-three grandchildren. They are as follows: Jim and Marian Lukens McCullough and their children, Stanley, Marilyn, Jimmie Dean and Patrick. Jimmie and Helen Coleman Lukens and their children, Patricia, Gordon, Clay and Gay. Georgia Lukens Merrill and her children, Robert, Carol Ann, Barbara and Richard. Dale and Marjorie Baier Lukens and their children Roger and Kaye. Bill and Anna Lukens Halsey and their children, DiAnna and Mike. Billy Lukens and his children, Kathy, Ricky, Jodie and Robin.
George was born in 1888. He was the son of Francis Lukens and Anne Johnson. He passed away in 1966.
George is listed in the 1910 US Census as a 23 year old single son living with parents Francis M Lukens and Anna E Lukens.
