Biography

William Lukens was born about 1713 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Lucken and Elizabeth Tyson Doors.

"William married Martha Pennington in an Abington Monthly Meetings (2nd intentions declared 10/28/1741.) Martha was teh dau. of Thomas and Martha (Steele) Pennington. After Martha died, William married her first cousin Elizabeth Pennington, dau. of Daniel and Elizabeth (Michener) Pennington. He and Martha were disowned by the Quakers in 1752, and reinstated in 1757:

'At Abington, 25th 5th mo. 1752. William Lucken having married his former wife's first cousin, contrary to the rules of our discipline according to which rule such persons as so marry are to be forthwith disowned without further dealing, Wherefore the said William Lucken stands disowned until he find freedom of his own accord to acknowledge his offense and thereby recommend himself worthy of the notice of his friends again.'

At Abington, 10-31-1757. 'Willm. Lukens being present produced a written acknowledgement and condemnation of his marrying his former wife's first Cousin the which being read was also received.'"^[1]
