Biography

LUGG, or LUGGE, JOHN, Boston 1637, by w. Jane had Elizabeth b. 7 Mar. 1638, bapt. 24 Mar. 1639, the mo. aft. his w. join. to the ch.; Mary, b. Aug. 1642, but the rec. of her bapt. 25 Sept. adds, "a. 4 days old;" and John, 4 Aug. 1644, a. 2 days old; and he d. 1647. He is, I presume, the man wh. Felt enumer. among Salem people, as John Lutf, hav. gr. of ld. 1637, because that name never occurs elsewhere except in the list of passeng. to pass for N. E. in the Mary and John, who took the o. of supremacy and alleg. 24 Mar. 1634. Final letters are easily mistaken; and very many of such grants were ineffect. In the will of Samuel Hagborne of Roxbury, 24 July 1643, are giv. "unto my br. Lugrr four bushels of corn, and my suit of apparel." His d. Mary m. 21 Feb. 1659, Nathaniel Barnard. Possib. there were both Luff and Lugg with common name of John, but it appears very unlikely.[1]

Birth

Baptized: 11 July 1595 at St. Nicholas Parish in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.

Emigration

They immigrated to New England about 1637. The first record of John Lugg in New England is the birth of his daughter Elizabeth in Boston on 7 March 1637/8.

Marriage and Children

Married: 3 Jan 1627 to Jane Deighton (1609-1671) at St. Nicholas Parish in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.[2] She married 2nd to Jonathan Negus by 27 October 1647 when they petitioned the General Court regarding her former husband's estate.[3]
Children of John Lugg and Jane Deighton:[2]
  1. Jane Lugg. Baptized 11 January 1628/9 at St. Nicholas Parish in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.
  2. Esther (Lugg) Bell. Baptized 24 February 1632/3 at St. Mary de Grace Parish in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.
  3. Son Lugg. This person does not appear in Smith's Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton. His birth date of 11 November 1637 is not compatible with having a sister born in March 1638. He should probably be disconnected after checking the parish registers in Gloucester.
  4. Elizabeth Lugg. Born on 7 March 1637/8 in Boston, Massachusetts.
  5. Mary (Lugg). Born in August 1642 and baptized 25 September 1642 in Boston.
  6. John Lugg. Born on 2 August 1644 and baptized 4 August 1644 (aged 2 days) in Boston, Massachusetts.

Death

Buried: 10 September 1646 at St. Nicholas Parish in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. He died while on a return trip to England.[2] On 27 October 1647, Jonathan Negus, who married the widow of John Lugg, petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts for control of the estate of John Lugg.[4]

I thought that John Lugg was killed by"Indians" in the New World. I do not have this statement right at hand, but that has been my understanding.
Hi Naomi, I added a page to the citation with a link to the actual source. Apparently the parish register for St. Nichols, Gloucester, Gloucestershire has a burial for "John Lugg of New England." He seems to have returned to England on business, and then died there. https://archive.org/details/ancestryofevabel04smit/page/492/mode/2up

I changed the death location. His three youngest children were born in Boston, Massachusetts Colony. My records do not give a cause of death.

Hi Richard, please read the source provided in the reply above. He died while on a trip to England. The burial record in England refers to him as "John Lugg of New England." Is there a record of his death/burial in boston.

I have corrected the death place back to England and did some tune up of the profile.
