Lorraine-229 presumably was bilingual, having been born and raised in the Tyrol, where German is spoken, because his family went into exile when King Louis XIV of France took over the Duchy of Lorraine but subsequently he was installed as the Duke of Lorraine, The two versions of his name are Léopold Joseph Charles de Lorraine and Leopold Josef Karl von Lothringen. Over time the German surname replaced the French surname and, after his son, Franz Josef, married Maria Theresa of the House of Habsburg, the Austrian Habsburg line became the House of Habsburg-Lothringen or Habsburg-Lorraine.
