Research Notes

When looking for sources for Alison it was noted that her name was not always recorded as Laurence as per the LNAB on the profile. When researching other children of Alison and her husband George it was noted that the majority of the children had Alison's surname recorded in a variation of Lorain.

This then opened up the possibilities for finding a marriage record for Alison and George. After searching on ScotlandsPeople using Al*son* L* in order to pick up variant spellings of her name we find a marriage in 1780, Cockburnspath for Alison Lorain and George Gilly.

This profile previously had a birth year of 1765 which would make Alison 15 at the time of her marriage. There is a birth for an Alison Laurence in 1765 in Burntisland, Fife however given the majority of the childrens baptisms as well as the marriage record being in a variant of Lorain it was unlikely to be correct.

Further searches brings us the result for Alison Lorain in Longformacus, Berwickshire which is only around 16 miles from the marriage place of Cockburnspath.

As a result of the birth source the LNAB of this profile should be changed to Lorain to reflect the spelling on this record.

Father:
John Lorain was born or baptised on 5 August 1723 in Duns, Berwickshire[5] the son of Alexander Lorain and Anns Dallas.

His siblings were:

  2. James Loram
    • Birth or Baptism: 26 July 1716 in Duns, Berwickshire[7]
  3. Elizabeth Lorain
    • Birth or Baptism: 31 January 1721 in Duns, Berwickshire[8]

John Lorain married Elspeth Craik on 11 May 1754 in Longformacus, Berwickshire[9].

Mother:
Elizabeth (Elspeth) Craik was born or baptised on 12 May 1729 in Longformacus, Berwickshire, the daughter of John Craik[10].

Hi Jim

As per the research I have done to find sources for this record Alison's LNAB should be changed to Lorain. Can you please edit the LNAB to reflect the birth source. If you need any help doing this please let me know.

Thanks Suzy
