Guy Lombardo was a Canadian-born, naturalized American bandleader, violinist and hydroplane racer.
Gaetano Alberto "Guy" Lombardo, born in London, Ontario, Canada, was the son of Italian immigrants Guy Lombardo and Lena Palladino. [1][2] Guy's father wanted his children to learn to play musical instruments. Three sons pursued a musical education: Guy took violin lessons, Carman learned to play the flute, while Lebert picked up a pair of drumsticks to learn to play the drums. This was the beginning of Guy Lombardo's band, named Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians in 1924. [3] In 1929, the band began a 33-year residency at the Roosevelt Grill in New York, where their New Year's Eve performance was broadcast and later telecast throughout North America.
When he wasn't leading his orchestra, Lombardo competed in hydroplane races, winning many throughout North America.[4]
On November 5, 1977, Lombardo died in Houston, Texas, having reached the age of 75. In the years since his death, "Auld Lang Syne" has remained North America's traditional musical accompaniment to the passing of each year. The last musical Lombardo brother, Victor Lombardo, died in 1994.
Guy Lombardo was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1978 and Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2002. In London, Ontario, both a bridge and a street have been named after him, while his adopted hometown of Freeport, New York, has its own Guy Lombardo Avenue.[5] In 1999 Canada Post issued a stamp in his honour.[6]
