Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Helen (Loguen) Douglass is a part of US Black heritage.

Helen Amelia Loguen, daughter of Jermain Logue and Caroline Storum was born in 1843.

Amelia was one of the 2 first Black educators in Binghamton, New York; the other was Edmonia Highgate.[1]

She married Lewis Henry Douglass, son of Frederick Douglass.

She died in 1936 in Washington, D.C.[2][3]

Amelia Douglass On Sunday, June 21, 1936, Amelia Douglass, wife of the late Lewis Douglass. Remains resting at the McGuire Funeral Home, 1820 9th st n.w. Funeral from the above funeral home Wednesday, June 24 at 3 p.m. Friends invited. Interment at Harmony Cemetery.

  • based on census records, it appears she had no children. Additionally, the obituary makes no reference to children. On other obituaries on that page, it was common to say "Relatives and friends invited," not just "Friends".Weatherall-96 22:54, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
  • Originally buried in Columbian Harmony Cemetery (Defunct) Washington, District of Columbia, District of Columbia, and then in 1960 graves were moved to Harmony Cemetery, Washington, Dc. [citation needed]
