English author trained as a civil engineer, who created the classic children's literature character of Doctor Dolittle
Hugh John Lofting was born on 14 Jan 1886, in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was trained as a civil engineer. During World War I, he was in the Irish Guard. Rather than writing to his children about the horrors of war, he sent letters to his children about Dr. Dolittle, a fictional veterinarian who would take care of animals. Those letters served as the basis of his later stories about Dr. Dolittle who could talk to the animals.
