Biography

Alice is the sister of my great grandfather. Letters I recently received from my cousin in England, Brian Slattery (3x great grandson of James Lockwood), have given me some insight into the personality of Alice and her role in the family. The letters were correspondence between Alice & Ann Lockwood, daughter of James Lockwood who remained in England. They were written over a period of years, ranging from 1885 to 1892. I believe the letters were written on behalf of her father, Joseph Charles Lockwood Sr, who was losing his eyesight and could no longer read or write. They discuss a variety of subjects, but primarily discuss the brothers and sisters of James and Joseph, as well as, her brother, Joe Jr.

Alice appears to be a kind-hearted soul, very concerned for the well being of the entire family of brothers and sisters on both sides of the Atlantic. She tends to her failing father constantly, reading to him daily. It is apparent she loves him dearly and embraces her extended family. She is truly matriarchal and helps provide the glue which keeps the large family of aunts and uncles together. It must have been a horrific emotional blow to the family when Alice died suddenly from a stroke at the age of 41.

Her father was involved in fraternal societies most of his adult life & that trait appears to have been passed on to Alice. She helped found the Star of the East Lodge No.4 in Trenton, NJ & became its second commander.

Excerpt form the research of Peter Lockwood, Guild of One Name Studies (cited below):

Research of Peter Lockwood

R ichard was born to Richard Brian and Mary Nixon Brian in the second quarter of 1856 in Longton, Staffordshire, England. His christening was on 1 Jun 1856 in Longton. Richard immigrated with his mother and siblings to America in 1871 on the Abyssinia. (His father had immigrated the previous year.) He married Alice Lockwood in Trenton, New Jersey on 17 Feb 1879. Richard drowned in the canal basin of the Keystone Pottery in Trenton at age 30. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, and that is where his parents and some of his siblings are interred. However, his widow Alice Lockwood Brian Packer is buried with their daughter Sarah and Sarah's husband in Riverview Cemetery in Trenton. His son Albert is also interred at Riverview. Alice's second husband Adin Ballon Packer is interred in Hammonton, Atlantic, New Jersey.

9. Alice E. Lockwood 3,22,29,30,31 was born on 10 Apr 1859 in Trenton, New Jersey, USA and died on 23 Jun 1900 in Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey, USA aged 41. General Notes: 1. From the "New Jersey Births and Christenings, 1660-1980" database at https://familysearch.org:- Name: Alice Lockwood Gender: Female Birth Date: 10 Apr 1859 Birthplace: Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey Father's Name: Joseph Lockwood Mother's Name: Mary Lockwood Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C05100-0 System Origin: New Jersey-EASy Source Film Number: 584571 Reference Number: v U p 118 2.Not found in the 1895 New Jersey State Census. 3. In the 1900 census, she is living with her father in law William D. Packer and daughter Sallie. 4. Alice's life seems to have been one of sadness. See married Richard Brian in1878, but he died of drowning in 1886. She then married Adin Packer in 1890, but Adin died in 1900 and Alice herself died in 1900. The 1900 census shows that Alice had 5 children, 4 of whom are alive at the time of the 1900 census. These children would be:- (a) Alice Sarah "Sallie" Brian who married John Fabian in 1901 (b) Walter Richard Brian who married firstly Alivira Huggins, then Minnie Curl (c) Albert Richard Brian - later adopted by his grandfather Richard Brian (d) Edwin Leslie Packer The 5th child is unknown. At the site at https://wwwnet1.state.nj.us/DOS/Admin/ArchivesDBPortal/DeathIndex.aspx there is a death record for Richard Brian, age 11 months in August 1882 in Trenton, New Jersey. This would fit in quite well. However there were other Brian/Bryan families living in Trenton including William and Maggie Brian and Alpheus and Adelia Bryan. As no record of Richard's birth has been found so far, and the death index does not show the parents, the identity of the 5th child remain unknown. 5. In the Trenton Times 27th January 1900, an article appears that has Mrs. Alice E. Packer of 500 Emory Avenue having an attack of paralysis in a drug store. On 2nd March 1900 an article appears showing her treatment by electricity. However in the Trenton Evening Times of 25th June 1900 she is listed as dying on 23rd June 1900 at the home of her brother in her 41st year.

In the Trenton Times dated 10th December 1886 the following article appeared:- "Articles of adoption were asked for and granted this morning to Richard Brian who desired to adopt his 14 months old grandson Joseph Albert Brian.". The mystery deepens further as there is a death record for Albert Richard Brian dated 25th July 1885 in Chambersburg, Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey age 0, born England (source New Jersey Deaths and Burials, 1720-1988 at https://familysearch.org)

2. In the 1880 census, surname is listed as BRYAN.
