The Legend

A man named Francis (or Frances) Little was the father of a woman named Juliana Little, born in 1595, who married John Sutton, of Attleborough, Norfolk County, England, becoming the mother of his children. She crossed the Atlantic with him to settle in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.^[1]

Francis /Little/ ^[2] was born in 1596 in Attleboro, England and died there in 1651. ^[2]

This profile, though based on materials widely disseminated on the internet, is not confirmed by primary sources, and therefore the very existence of Francis and his daughter is questionable.

Popularity of the Legend

A search on the internet for combinations such as "Francis Little" or "Juliana Little" and "Attleborough" produces multiple references at large numbers of personal genealogies, as well as such locations as:

No source has been found which refers Francis Little back to any source that provides primary documentation such as parish baptismal records, wills, and other records.

Some researchers say she was Juliana Little, born in 1595 in England to Frances (or Francis) Little but we have no supporting data.^[3]

Characteristics of the Legend: Errors

According to the legend, Francis had a daughter, Juliana (or Julian) born about 1595 -- one year before his own birth. Whoever put the legend together paid no attention to how the various dates and places relate to each other.
