Since professor Carl Linnæus was granted nobility by the king in 1757 but did not adopt the name von Linné before he was introduced at the House of Nobility in 1761, none of the Linnæus children were born with the name von Linné. The female form, Linnæa, was used for the daughters.[1]
Sophia, the daughter of Archiater Carl Linnæus and his wife Sara Elisabet Moræa, was born in Uppsala 9 November 1757.[2]
From 1774 the female members of the family von Linné were registered in the household records for Danmark parish, where they resided at Hammarby estate. Here most of the birth dates of the von Linné sisters are wrong; Sophia has been assigned the birth date 12/11 1758.[3][4]
Miss Sophia Linné at Hammarby married Academy ombudsman Samuel Christopher Duse from Uppsala 13 December 1781.[5] Sophia moved to her husband in Uppsala, where they lived in Nr 2 of the quarter Leoparden.[6] Their daughter Johanna Elisabeth, born one year later, remained their only child.
Sophia Duse, born von Linné, widow of Academie Ombudsmannen Samuel Duse, died in Uppsala 20 February 1830.[7]
Sophia Duse is buried at Uppsala cemetery.
