Biography

Alfred Stanley Lines was born in 1859, in Davistown, South Australia, Australia. Son of Joseph Lines and Mary Campion. Occupation: Drover. Lines Stanley Alfred [aka Lawrence Sydney Alfred]: Service number 2605; place of birth Burra, SA; Place of Enlistment, Liverpool NSW; Next of kin - (friend) Thomson Nellie.

He married Elizabeth Jane Stephens, 17, in 1881. He was the father of two children, one aged 2 years and the other an infant. He was the father of Rose Grow.

Occupation: Drover.

Alfred was addicted to drink and had formed an illicit intercourse with his sister-in-law, Amelia Grow, then aged abt 16, and who gave birth to a child, the paternity of which he acknowledged. Alfred lived at Mitchell Flat, the child Stanley Alfred Lines, born 6 Apr 1884 was registered with parents Elizabeth Jane Grow and Alfred Lines, Kooringa, Burra, South Australia, Australia.

On 12 Jun 1885, in North Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, his death was by suicide, after murdering his wife Elizabeth and her lover Maurice William O'Connor, in Stanley Street, North Adelaide, South Australia. Maurice William O'Connor, a labourer, had for some time an improper intimacy with Elizabeth Lines. At the start of June, Lines went off saying he was droving to Cooper's Creek and would be away six weeks. On 5 Jun 1885, Elizabeth and Maurice met members of his family in Adelaide and then set up house in North Adelaide. Alfred returned unexpectedly, read the letter and the rest followed. In Elizabeth's purse was found a note from Alfred Lines, it read: I hereby give my handwriting stating that I am no longer the husband of Elizabeth Lines, she can go anywhere she likes, and can marry whoever she likes, signed Alfred Lines this day, 17th of March, 1885. The South Australian Police Gazette Inquest reported that Alfred Lines killed Elizabeth (Grau) Stephens and her lover Maurice O'Connor then killed himself.
