Biography

Emma's birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1845 in the Banbury Union district.^[1]

Emma's father William Lines married Ann Busby. The banns were read on 20 March 1836 in Shutford, Oxfordshire, England.^[2]

She married William James Brookes either in Portland, Victoria or Essex, England according to conflicting Certificates.

James Brooks died from Dysentery in 1869.

Emma Brooks married Frederick Winzer in 1872 ^[3] and settled in Warrnambool.

She died in 1931. ^[4]

There are 2 birth registrations for Emma Lines in 1845 that might relate to a birth in Oxfordshire:

• Emma Lines - registered in Apr-Jun quarter 1845, Banbury registration district; mother's maiden name BUSBY
• Emma Lines - registered in Oct-Dec quarter 1845, Brackley registration district; mother's maiden name TOY

There is one more in 1843 that is possible:

• Emma Lines - registered in Oct-Dec quarter 1843, Banbury registration district; mother's maiden name WIMBUSH

(There are only 2 places in Oxfordshire in Brackley registration district: Finmere and Mixbury; Banbury registration district stretches to parts of 4 counties)

In 1851:

• Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire (Banbury registration district): Emma Lines, age 7, daughter of Jonas and Elizabeth
• Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire (Banbury registration district): Emma Lines, age 6, daughter of William and Ann
• Eydon, Northamptonshire (Brackley registration district): Emma Lines, age 5, daughter of William and Ann

Only one was actually born in Oxfordshire; her parents are indeed William and Ann, but the mother's maiden name does not match (Busby not Gardiner.) It is difficult to be confident that this is a match to someone born in about 1845 in an area as large as Oxfordshire.

But, if that Emma is right, then

Emma Lines was born in 1845 at Swalcliffe in Oxfordshire, the daughter of William Lines and his wife Ann, formerly Ann Busby. ^[5].

In 1851, Emma was living at Swalcliffe with her parents William and Ann and their other children. Her age was given as 6, implying a birth date in 1844 or 1845. Her birthplace was given as Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire. ^[6]

It is hard to see how the information apparently provided by the death registration can be reconciled with any of the births

Further note: Frederick and Emma Winzer seem to have had at least 7 children born in Victoria, between 1873 and 1887. The "mother's family name at birth" attached to these are:

• Lines (4 times)
• Sines (once) - presumably an error for Lines
• Sims (once) - maybe a variant of Lines/Sines
• Brooks (once) - presumably meaning her name before marriage rather than "at birth"
