Biography

Flag of Oxfordshire (adopted 2017)
Elizabeth (Lines) Hoare was born in Oxfordshire, England.
This profile is part of the Hoare Name Study.
Elizabeth was the wife of a Canal Boatman
Elizabeth was a Friend (Quaker)

Elizabeth, daughter of William Lines (1743-1804) & Hannah 'Anna' (Cleaver) Lines (1734-1779) , was baptised on 12 March 1774 in Neithrop, Banbury, St Mary, Oxfordshire, England.[1]

Elizabeth's father, William Lines/Lynes was born in 1743 in Adderbury, Oxfordshire, he first married Hannah 'Ann' Cleaver from Hornton in 1772 and they had 3 children, including Elizabeth. William's wife died in 1779 in Banbury and William remarried Jane (Hale) Lines (1754-) that same year, William had a further 8 children by his second wife. On some of the baptismal records of his children, his occupation was given as a 'Comber'. (A wool comber was exactly what it says, someone who used a comb on wool to straighten out the fibres prior to being spun).

Elizabeth (19) married John Hoare (23) (born on February 4, 1771 in Banbury; son of Robert Hoare and Lucy (Ward) Hoare) on July 23, 1794 in Neithrop. John Hoare, boatman, bachelor, and Elizabeth Line, both of the parish of Banbury, St Mary, married in the Dissenters Meeting House, by licence. They were married by John Lambert, minister. In the presence of W Strong and George Baker. (Quakers) [2]. Neither could sign their name as they just gave a mark. [3] [4] People sometimes married by licence to avoid the process of having Banns called on three consecutive Sundays, in this case, it is probable that John was going to be away from Banbury delivering goods on the Oxford Canal, and you could marry straight away, by licence, without having Banns read in a Quakers meeting House. [5] Their children were:

Elizabeth had married John Hoare a boatman from Neithrop in Banbury. They probably shared a house with other boat families in Neithrop but spent most of their time on the narrow-boats, where they lived with their children, usually transporting coal and tar from Staley's Wharf in Banbury. This was a very hard life with all the family living on the boat, when not back in Banbury.[6]
The children of these boat people very often could not read or write, as there was no opportunity for schooling, and most of the children were born on the boats and baptised at local parish churches wherever they were moored. As is the case with 3 of their children who were baptised at Fenny Compton in Warwickshire, a favourite place to moor their boats for the night on their way to Coventry. This does make tracking these families quite a challenge. The route to Coventry from Banbury included the villages of Cropredy, Farnborough, Fenny Compton, Napton on the Hill, Braunston, Rugby, Newbold upon Avon, Ansty and Hawkesbury.
These canal boat families were very transient in nature, so any of the Hoare family recorded in Banbury on any census night was purely coincidental. Over the next two centuries, some descendants of John and Elizabeth were still carrying on the tradition of living in narrow-boats.[6]

Elizabeth died before 1819 in Neithrop, aged 44, and was buried on 26 August 1819 in Banbury, St Mary, Oxfordshire, England.[7]

Three centuries of Quakerism in Banbury
Quakers believed that there was inner light in everyone, and that all human beings deserved to be treated as equal and therefore were deserving of equal treatment and respect. [2]
