Dennis was born to John Lilly and Ann Lupton in Newark Upon Trent, Nottinghamshire, England in 1788, christened on 27 May 1788. He married Elizabeth Lydia Sharp on 9 November 1815 in Newark Upon Trent, Nottinghamshire, England. They had 12 children: Elizabeth Ann, b. 1816, died young, George, b. 1817, John William, b. 1819, Elizabeth Ann (#2), b. 1820, Frederick Henry, b. 1821, Alfred, b. 1822, died young, Alfred Charles, (#2?) b. 1824, Charles, b. 1825, Lister, 1828–1928, Dennis, 1830–1831, Alfred (#3?), b. 1832, Henry Hurton Lilly, b. 1832. Alfred #3 and Henry were probably twins.

In the 1851 Census, Dennis Lilly, 62, was living in St Peters At Gowts, Lincolnshire, England with his wife, Elizabeth, 60, and three children: George, 34, John, 32, and Alfred, 19. All children are listed as born in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Dennis' occupation was listed as "Coal Dealer".
