Biography

Morgan Lewis is the son of Francis Lewis, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

General Morgan Lewis served with 4th New York Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Morgan served in the continental army as a colonel in charge of the quartermaster corp. After the war he completed his law training and served as the governor of New York from 1804-1807. 4th New York as per the SAR, citing Orderly Books of 4th New York Regiment, 1778-1780, pg 345 ^[1]

During the War of 1812 he was promoted to the rank of major general and presided over the quartermaster corps. In 1813 General Lewis was promoted to the rank of major-general. He served on the Niagara frontier, captured Fort George, and commanded at Sackett's Harbor and French Creek. At the close of the war he advanced the funds that were necessary for the discharge of American prisoners in Canada.

Morgan married Gertrude Livingston, daughter of Judge Robert Livingston, Jr. of the historically famous Livingston family of New York.
