Ferdinand de Lesseps was notable for being the developer of the Suez Canal, which was completed in 1869. A similar attempt at building a Panama Canal ended in failure. The project was eventually bought by the United States and the project completed in 1914.[1]
Ferdinand was born on 28 brumaire an XIV (19 November 1805) in Versailles. He was the son of Mathieu Lesseps and Catherine Degrivegnée.[2] He married Agathe Delamalle on 19 December 1837 in the first arrondissement of Paris.[3] He later married Louise-Hélène Autard de Bragard on 25 November 1869 in Ismailia, Egypt.[4]
