Biography

Ethel Gertrude Lenfest (30 Sep 1898 Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 2 Feb 1995 Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee). Her Lenfest pedigree is Ethel Gertrude Lenfest 5, Charles Grant Lenfest 4 (1868 – 1927), Solomon Lenfest Jr 3 (1822 – 1883), Solomon Lenfest Sr 2 (1795 – 1858), Peter (Pierre Lenfestey) Lenfest 1 (1739 – 1820).

All Lenfests in the United States are descended from a single immigrant, Pierre Lenfestey of Parish St Pierre du Bois, Isle of Guernsey, Channel Islands, a small island off the coast of France (with the exception of a few families that migrated here from Canada). I have compared DNA from Ethel Gertrude Lenfest's family against current Lenfest family members still living on Isle of Guernsey and we have a close autosomaal chromosome match.

Ethel Gertrude Lenfest's father was Charles Grant Lenfest (21 Dec 1868 Cambridge, Massachusetts - 26 Jan 1927 Boston, Massachusetts) son of Solomon Lenfest, Jr (15 Aug 1822 Boston, Massachusetts - 28 Jan 1883 Cambridge, Massachusetts) and his wife Jane Turnbull (Oct 1824 Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada - 10 Jan 1909 Winchester, Middlesex, Massachusetts).

Her mother was Maria Adela Sampson (3 Oct 1867 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 14 Aug 1949 Belmont, Middlesex, Massachusetts) daughter of James Edward Sampson (14 Nov 1839 Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts - 30 May 1913 Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts) and Henrietta E Bird (9 Jan 1841 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 29 Nov 1915 Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts).

In 1921 in Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts, she married first: Captain Roland Henry Baker, Sr (1 May 1897 West Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts - 27 Jan 1985 Elkins, Merrimack, New Hampshire) a veteran of World War I and son of Frederic Warren Kidder Baker (1872 – 1941) and Ada Foss (1876 – 1925). They had two children together:

1) Col Roland Henry Baker, Jr (10 October 1923 Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 12 June 1994 Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee) an aircraft carrier pilot in World War II and the Korean War who received the Distinguished Flying Cross from the President of the United States for his service over the Island of Japan. He married first Cornelia "Connie" Keyworth (1932 – 2013) and had two daughters: Kathryn Ann "Kathy" Baker and Carey Lee Baker. He married second Joan Leonard Chadbourne the daughter of Joseph Humphrey Chadbourne and Barbara Anita Bullard and had one son Roland Henry Baker III. He adopted Joan's three daughters from a previous marriage: Sivea, Gwyn and Meg Cattelll. He married third Emily Kay Carter, no children with Emily.

2) Jean Baker (7 February 1928 Belmont, Middlesex, Massachusetts - 21 Feb 2003 Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts) who had three daughters: Robin, Susan and Kim.

In 1930 in Belmont, Middlesex, Massachusetts she married second Captain Roland Harrison Choate (28 Sep 1888 Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts - 3 Jul 1959 Everett, Middlesex, Massachusetts) a veteran of World War I and son of William Everett Choate, Jr (1864 – 1929) and Susie Frost Herrick (1866 – 1937). They had no children.
