Biography

Mary was born in Chester County, South Carolina in 1840. She was the daughter of Henry Lee and Mary Rebecca Roper [1] She married John James Ryan Workman after 1855. The 1880 census taken in Catawba in York County, South Carolina lists their family members:[2]

  1. Elizabeth Workman, age 22 (bc 1858)
  2. Pinckney Austin Workman, age 20 (1859-1934)
  3. Napoleon Bonaparte Workman, age 16 (1865-1934)
  4. James James Workman, age 11 (1870-1943)
  5. Edward Mc Burnell Workman, age 9 (1873-1956)
  6. Roberson Lee Workman, age 6 (1874-1893)
  7. Annie M. Workman, age 2 (1879-1959)

The 1880 census doesn't list a son, Lindsey Workman, who was born in 1860 but died as a child nor a son, Francis Marion Workman, who was born in 1867 and died in 1878, at age 11. There is a possibility of another son, Arthur G. Lee, born around 1876, and it's possible that he also died as a child.

Her husband died in 1896. Mary passed away in 1922 and was buried at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill, South Carolina. [3][4]
