Early Life and Marriage

Tryphosa Lee was born about 1597 (she was age 27 on 1 May 1624),[1] presumably at England.[2] Her parents and early family are unknown. She first appears on the records of Leiden (Holland) in the notations about her marriage to Stephen Tracy.

There were several Lees or Lee families of Leiden during the time Tryphosa was there. Dr. Henry Martyn Dexter[3] and/or his son, Rev. Morton Dexter, twice addressed details in the records about the pilgrims at Leiden, including the Lees--first in 1903[4] and again in 1906,[5] Of note, Bridget (Lee) Fuller married Samuel Fuller at Leiden in 1617; her brother Samuel Lee also resided Leiden, as did their mother, Josephine Lee. The relationships between Bridget, Samuel and Josephine are clear from the Leiden records. The Leiden records do not show a further relationship with Tryphosa.

Stephen and Tryphosa married at Leiden on 2 January 1621.[6]

Marriage, Steven Traes and Tryfoce Le, 2 January 1621, Leiden

From the Dutch record, as indexed by the Regionaal Archief Leiden (RAL),[7][8] "Steven Traes, saeywerker" (bachelor born in England), [accompanied by] "acquaintance Anthony Clements [sic],"[9] [was married to] 'Tryfoce Le[10] (spinster born in England), [accompanied by] "acquaintance [Rose] [Lisle] Jenning."[11] (See also Rose (Lisle) Jennings, wife of John Jennings.) Notice reports banns published 1st, December 19, 1620; 2nd, December 2, 1620; 3rd, January 1, 1621; couple married … “this IInd of January 1621.” The marriage was before Jan Orlers and Cornelis Henricxz van Goten, bailiffs.

In the Leiden census of 1622, as indexed by the Regionaal Archief Leiden (RAL),[12] "Steven Truer" [Stephen Tracy] and his wife "Truy Voosta" [Thryphosa Lee] were enumerated at Pieterskerkhof district of Zevenhuizen in a large, multifamily household of Thomas Brouwer [Thomas Brewer], Enges edelman [English nobleman], and his wife, Machieu Brouwer [Machieu Brewer], together with "brother" Tomas Willigs [Thomas Willett] and "sister" Hester Willigs [Hester Willett]. As indexed by RAL, four "Tracy" children were also reported--Daniel Tracy, son; Rebecca Tracy, daughter; John Tracy, son; Daniel Tracy, son, but these are surely otherwise Daniel Fairfield, his wife, Rebecca (Willet) Fairfield, and their sons, Daniel and John Fairfield.

WIP ... more to come.

Family

Tryphosa married Stephen Tracy, 2 Jan 1620/1621 in Leyden, Holland.[13] Five children were born to the couple, [14] the first presumably at Leyden; the rest, in Massachusetts.[15]

  1. Sarah Tracy b. at Leyden, Holland, about January 1623. She m. George Partridge.
  2. Rebecca Tracy b. between 1624 and 1627, say 1625, She m. at Eastham, William Merrick (or Myrick).
  3. Ruth Tracy b. say 1628; living, unmarried, in 1655--mentioned by name in her father's power of attorney
  4. Mary Tracy b. say 1630; living in 1655, perhaps unmarried--mentioned by name her father's power of attorney. (She was not the wife of Francis Griswold or William Bradford Jr.)
  5. John Tracy b say 1632. John was mentioned by name in his father's power of attorney. He m. Mary Prence, daughter of Thomas Prence.

Research Notes

  • In the Leiden poll tax census of 1622 (above), Stephen and Tryphosa (Lee) Tracy lived in the home of Thomas Brewer, otherwise the eldest son of Robert Brewer of Boxley, Kent, England, and Marian/Maria Clarke (buried Boxley, 1584). Robert Brewer's second wife was Elizabeth (buried Boxley, 1589). She was probably Elizabeth Lee, the daughter of Richard Lee.
  • In 2020, WikiTree user J Droessler identified a baptismal record for one Tryphosa Lee, 7 August 1595 at Lilbourne, Northamptonshire, England, reporting a father, Rycharde (Richard) Lee.

Could this Baptism Record for a Tryphosa Lee on 7 Aug 1595 at Lilbourne, Northamptonshire, England be for this Tryphosa Lee? It is such an uncommon name, that it would seem probable. Father is Anthony Lee.

It definitely has possibilities, especially considering all references to her birth that I have found have only have given 'about' for a year. It is also the first reliable indication of a parent that I have seen, and gives a definite line of inquiry to pursue. Thank you!
Ancestry transcribes the father's name as Anthony, but that does not look correct. It is smudged and hard to read, but looks like "Rycharde" to me. Compare the next page where there is a "Rycharde" baptised; the word looks nearly identical.

It definitely says Rycharde

Has any source been given for her parentage? I think her father should be marked uncertain if not unlinked.

There doesn't appear to be any credible evidence to suppor who Tryphosa's parents are.

doesn't disprove her parents, just one opinion out of three, the other two are a little less adamant. Its very possibly correct, and a note could perhaps be included in the Biograpy .

Tryphosa's Lee/Hungerford parentage appears to have been disproven, per these three posts on a medieval discussion board here and here and here
