Linda, I can't argue with your logic on the missing maiden name. One thing I might mention is that Kentucky did not exist in 1780. It did not become a state until 1792. Eastern part of what became Kentucky, including Mason County and Grant County, was all Fayette Co, Virginia. So if she was born in 1780, it wasn't in Kentucky and it wasn't in Mason or Grant Counties; either location would have been Virginia.

Fayette County was renamed Bourbon, Virginia in 1786. Mason County, Virginia was split off Bourbon County in 1788 and Grant County was split off Bourbon in 1820, after it was Kentucky. The village of Mason is in Grant County. I list both as when someone posts Mason, Ky it is not clear which Mason.

Mary Ann Lee's father is listed as George Henry Lee. He was born in Warrenton Plantation, Virginia and was in the Rev. War. As payment he got a large land grant in what is now Mason County, Kentucky in about 1795 and he died there. So, that is well after Mary's birth in 1780. But, it does put her into "Mason, Ky" in 1800 and there is marriage record of a James Davis getting married there. But, there are records of "James Davis" in other counties in Kentucky. So, as you said, we are at an impasse.

I'm seeing some disconnects between the Mary Ann who married James Davis (Davis-81565) and this MaryAnn Lee (Lee-36293). I've researched this family for decades and have never seen evidence of MaryAnn's maiden name. Does anybody have proof that's not shown here?

In this case, I checked out the Ancestry tree listed in Sources. I don't see outside sources and the timeline doesn't work. MaryAnn's mother Mary Ludwell was supposedly born in Mason County, Kentucky, but we know our James Davis's wife was born back in Virginia. There may well have been a Mary Ann Lee who married a James Davis because both surnames were common. But I don't believe they're related to this family who landed in Jennings County.

Since this profile is clearly intended as the MaryAnn spouse of our James Davis: I'd like to edit MaryAnn to delete her last name, disconnect her from her parents who are listed, and connect that revised "MaryAnn _____" profile to all their kids. Thoughts?
