In 1775, William Lee enlisted in Bedford County, Pennsylvania and served for a year under Captain Robert Cluggage, First Pennsylvania Regiment. He then re-enlisted and served as a corporal, sergeant, quartermaster sergeant, sergeant major, and forage master in the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment until peace was declared in 1783.
