Pilot Officer Philip Howard Leckrone was born in 1912 at Salem, Illinois. He was the son of William M. Leckrone and Lottie McMackin. Leckrone flew with the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain in World War II. He was one of nine American pilots (sometimes stated as eleven) who flew with the famed R.A.F. Fighter Command between 10 July and 31 October 1940 and was attached to No. 616 Squadron. His participation in the Battle of Britain is not disputed. He was killed in a flying accident in January 1941 in England.
