Notes

Note N286
Jean had mastoid problems as a child and was deaf in one ear. As a result he was not drafted into the French army during the war. Louis (his father) didn't want Jean to serve the Germans during WWII. When France was occupied, Germans took anyone who could stand up. Jean hid in the attic. He built a radio in the box spring in the attic so the family could hear the news from England during the war. This was not appreciated by the Germans. During the war, the Germans would take hostages randomly from a bus or train to be used to guard the RR. If Jean were chosen, he would come home and tell his family what happened. His father Louis did not allow Jean to go - he always took his place
