Biography

Betsey (Laxton) Pratt was born in Northamptonshire, England.

Elizabeth Jane Laxton known as Betsey was baptised on 3 Oct 1819 in the village of Marholm, Northamptonshire, England. She is the second child and first daughter of William Laxton and Elizabeth Aveling.

She had two husbands. Her first husband was John Thomas Robinson who she married in Cambridgeshire in the second quarter of 1843. The marriage is registered in the Witchford District which includes Whittlesey. In the 1841 census, a John and Elizabeth Robinson were living with no issue in Whittlesey. This sounds like Betsey and John although the couple weren't formally married until 2 years later. In the 1851 census, Betsey appears in the household of one Thomas Robinson in Whittlesey. The offspring in this census overlap with those in the 1861 census for the widowed Betsey suggesting her husband's full name was either Thomas John or John Thomas Robinson (probably the latter - see children below). Betsey was widowed in 1858 when John died, aged 37, in November of that year.

Betsey and John had five children between 1844 and 1859: Sarah (baptised 1841, 1842 or 1845), Mary Ann (baptised 1846), Harriet (baptised 1848), William (baptised 1850/51) and John Thomas (baptised in 1859). Their second son was born after the death of his father in 1858 and seems to have been given his father's name. For at least a decade between 1851 and 1861, Betsey worked, like her husband, as an agricultural labourer.

Betsey's second husband was William Pratt who she married on 28 Jul 1863 in Coates, Cambridgeshire. There were no children from this marriage.

Betsey died, aged 80, in the last quarter of 1899 in Whittlesey. She is buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard in Coates near Whittlesey where she had resided for many years. William outlived her by 11 years. By 1901 he was living in Whittlesey Workhouse.
