Henry Ware Lawton was an American career soldier. Lawton, a Captain in the Union Army, served with distinction during the Civil War. Lawton was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Civil War. Lawton was the first American General to be killed in action overseas.

Henry Ware Lawton (March 17, 1843 – December 19, 1899) was a highly respected U.S. Army officer who served with distinction in the Civil War, the Apache Wars, the Spanish–American War and was the only U.S. general officer to be killed during the Philippine–American War. The city of Lawton, Oklahoma, takes its name from General Lawton, as does a borough in the city of Havana, Cuba. Liwasang Bonifacio (Bonifacio Square) in downtown Manila was formerly named Plaza Lawton in his honor.

Henry was the son of George Lawton and Catherine R. (Daley) Lawton, he was born in Erie County, Ohio.[1]

He married Mary Craig in 1881.[1]

Henry was shot and died on 19 Dec 1899 at San Mateo, Rizal Province, Calabarzon, Philippines in the Spanish American War. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia. His memorial has photos, biographical material and links to those of family members.[2]
