Elizabeth (Lawrence) Hussey was born in Oxfordshire, England.
Birth and Parentage
Elizabeth Lawrence was from a family resident at Fulwell in Oxfordshire. [1]
Marriages and Family
By license dated 1 February 1546 she married John Welsborne, son of Thomas Welsborne and his wife, Margery Poure. [1] John had an illegitimate son, named Arthur.
According to this source, Elizabeth was within two months of giving birth to their first child, John when they married. Their second son was named Edward, and was born in 1547. [1] John died 11 April 1548 [2]having made her his sole executrix, [1] and was buried at Mixbury. [3] By his will Elizabeth was granted the manors of Mixbury and Fulwell for life. [3]
On 16 August 1565,
Letter of attorney by Dame Elizabeth Wellisborne, of Asteley, co. Warwick, widow, late the wife of John Wellisborne, knight, deceased, to Edmund Wellicombe, of Myxburye, co. Oxford, yeoman, to deliver seisin to John Wellisborne, son and heir of the said John, and to Anne, his wife, according to the effect of an indenture of demise, 16 August, 7 Elizabeth, (1565) by her made, of the manor of Fulwell, the manor of Mixburye, the cony warren, and all other the land, &c. of the said Sir John, granted and demised to her for life, in the counties of Oxford and Buckingham, except a meadow called 'Lynche meadow' and another meadow called 'Wysshames Lake.'
10 August, 9 Elizabeth, (1567)
Signed Elyzabeth Wellsburne, Rycharde Chambrelayne.
Witnesses: - Wyllyam Momforde and others (named).
Seal. Memorandum endorsed of livery of seisin, 20 October, in the said year: also 'Lady Wellisbornes letter of attorney to Wellicomb to delyver possession to my unckle Wellisborne.'[4]
Oddly, in this deed, Elizabeth is still named Dame Elizabeth 'Wellisborne', not of Fulwell, co. Oxon, but of Asteley, co. Warwick, which leads one to suppose that she and her husband Edward had lived together at Astley before they were married. Property and inheritance may have played a role here. The Rycharde Chambrelayne who also signs his name must be their son. From the next document, however, it can be seen that Elizabeth kept her first married name - she seems to have preferred to be known as a Dame or Lady, than just plain 'Mrs'. When she bore Edward Chamberlain, [5]son of Sir Edward Chamberlaine[6]Richard and Frances is unclear.[6]
What is known is that Edward died on 29 October 1557. [6][3]
On 4 December 1564 there was an exchange of lands in Arley and Astley, Warwickshire, between William Skevyngton of Skeffington and Elizabeth, (called) Welsborne, widow of Sir John Welsborne, knight, and also of Edward Chamberleyn. (Skeffington's seal, a mermaid). [7]
In Oxford in 1566, Elizabeth made a grant to Arthur Welsborne, her first husband's illegitimate son, of £2 (40 shillings) per annum from the manor of Mixbury and Fulwell the manors being settled on her eldest son John and his bride Anne Greenway. [3][8]
