Biography

Archibald Lauder was a cadet in Ogilvy's regiment in the 1745 rebellion, joining on the day of the Battle of Prestonpans, 21st September 1745. He marched to Derby (though wounded in his left hand) but was captured at Carlisle (from where his father narrowly escaped) and imprisoned, firstly, there, in a church with others, their clothing being removed from them. He was then sent to York Castle and then to Lincoln, finally in June 1746 to London where he died in prison as a result of his ill-treatment. He was said by the authorities at the time of death to be 16 years old.[1]

He wrote his last letter on 29th July 1746 where he states that "I unluckily lost the opportunity of leaving Carlisle with my father who went off on the 20th December, and we were taken the 30th......if you see my papa, give my humble duty to him and may God Almighty be with you all."
