Biography

An essay by Alexander Grant entitled "Extinction of Direct Male Lines" mentions that the Lauders were one of only 31% of the great families of the time of Robert the Bruce who survived in the direct male line beyond 1500.[1]

A Sasine registered 16th October 1606 in favour of this Robert Lauder reads [summary]: Compeared William Lauder in Belhaven as attorney in the name of Robert Lauder, pupil, son of George Lauder in Belhaven, concerning a sixteenth part of the lands of West Barns now called the Rig which had belonged to Alexander and George Lauder in the parish of Dunbar, having a charter granted by George Lauder with consent of Alexander Lauder his father in favour of Robert Lauder.[2]

In the General Register of Sasines there is a sasine registered on 29th July 1628[3] for Marie Douglas, spouse of Robert Lauder, son of George Lauder of West Barns.

"Sometime after 1650 Robert Lauder of Belhaven & West Barns had a grant of Arms as a descendant of a younger son of Lauder of The Bass, with differences for his wife, Marie, as a cadet of Douglas of Whittinghame."[4][5]

Robert Lauder in Belhaven is on a Commission to try witches in 1661 (pps:33/34); and in 1662 Robert Lauder portioner of West Barns was on a Commission to try witches (p.143), and again on another to try a murderer on 5th January 1664 (p.477).[6]

In a charter by Anna, Duchess of Hamilton, in favour of William Menteith, portioner of Reddoch, of the lands of Caldcoittis, dated at Hamilton Palace on 12th April 1667, one of the witnesses was "Mr.Robert Lawder, portioner of Belhavin."[7]

Alexander Nisbet states: "I have seen a charter of these lands [part of Belhaven & West Barns] granted by King James VI dated 1594 to Alexander Lauder, and his eldest son George. This George granted a disposition and charter in 1666, of the lands of part of Belhaven and West-Barns to his eldest son Robert, procreated between him and his wife Elizabeth Lauder. Which Robert grants a charter to his eldest son, Robert Lauder, procreated between him and his wife Mary, daughter of Patrick Douglas of Standingstone, in the year 1672." [8]

His children, Robert, James, Helen and Margaret are named in his wife's Testament.
