Biography

Alexander Lauder had Sasines confirmed to him of the Lauder of Haltoun estates of Whitslaid, Berwickshire, plus Norton, at Ratho, Over-Gogar and its mill, and the 16 acres of Bruntisfield in Edinburgh in 1454 (just 2 years after his father William was killed).[1] He would have had to be 'of age' for these confirmations.

In a charter of Sasine dated 5th November 1459 Alexander Lauder is recorded as "Lord of Haltoun".[2]

In a Notorial Instrument dated 23rd January 1461/2 "the late William Lauder of Haltoun" is mentioned, his son [this] Alexander being noted as his heir.[3]

Sir Alexander Lauder of Haltoun, militi, received a Safe Conduct from King Edward IV for travel in England dated 14th March 1466.[4]

Sir Alexander Lauder of Haltoun was a Member of Parliament in 1471, 1484 and 1487.

In the Protocol Book of James Young (Scottish Record Society) there is a declaration dated 1st April 1503: "Sir Alexander Lawedir of Haltoun declared that he had given to his son and heir apparent Sir George Lawedir of Whitslaid, the fee of the four merkslands of Goger called 'Tenandry', lying on the north side of the town of Gogar, which the deceased William Carrebaris [possibly a son of Agnes Fallow née Carrebois - second wife of Sir Robert Lauder of The Bass who d.1495] formerly occupied, reserving a liferent. He now renounced this liferent. Done in the notary's booth in the burgh of Edinburgh. Witnesses: Alexander Lawedir, Provost of Edinburgh, William Lawedir, Mr.James Lawedir and Mr David Lawedir, brothers-german and sons of the said Alexander Lawedir of Haltoun" and three others. In the same publication (number 1418) is what appears to be a Sasine dated 20th March 1504 whereby Sir Alexander Lauder of Haltoun, knight, sold his property/superiority of Mertoun and all its rights to William Ker of Yair. Four days later, on the 25th March 1504 (number 1419) Sir Alexander Lauder of Haltoun, knight, sold or feued to Robert Lauder of that Ilk, his heirs and successors, one quarter of the mylne of Lauder, reserving an annual rental.

There are two Special Retours in favour of George Lawder [Lauder] of Quhitslaid [Whitslaid] kt, as heir of the deceased Alexander Lawder of Hawtoune, kt, his father, in lands of Haltoune with Northraw of Rathowe [Ratho] and Nortoune [Norton] with its pertinents annexed to barony of Renfrew, lying in sheriffdom of Edinburgh, dated 30th August, 1507.[5]

In the archives is also a Special Retour to Sir George Lauder of Quitslaid, Knight in the lands of Easter and Wester Wormistoun and Over and Nether Kidstoun, Peebleshire, dated 16th August 1507, serving him as son and heir of Sir Alexander Lauder of Haltoun, knight, in the lands of Easter and Wester Wormistoun and Over and Nether Kidstoun, with the Mill thereof, except forty acres of the said lands in which the said George was infeft long before the death of his father. The lands are held of the King in chief, which Sir Alexander has been dead about six weeks. The Retour was expede at Peblis [Peebles]. [6]

Although he appears in a great many archives, his wife's name is unknown.

It would appear from several accounts that the Lauder of Haltoun family continued to use the Arms of the ancient Lauder family (Bass changed theirs c1400) possibly until circa 1500. They were then amended: the original crest became incorporated in the main Arms with a new crest appearing plus mottos.[7][8]
