An essay by Alexander Grant entitled "Extinction of Direct Male Lines" mentions that the Lauders were one of only 31% of the great families of the time of Robert the Bruce who survived in the direct male line beyond 1500.[1]
On 28th February 1534 the King granted a charter of William Lauder of Haltoun (with the agreement of William, Lord Borthwick) to his son and heir-apparent Alexander Lauder, and Jonette Borthwick his spouse, daughter of the said Lord, of the [feu of] lands of Over-Gogar, Edinburghshire; the lands of Newbigging in Lauderdale; the lands of Nether Kidstoun in Peebleshire.
In the National Archives is a Commission by Mary Queen of Scots to Alexander Lauder of Haltoun and others as Justiciars, dated 10th December 1545.
A charter dated 21st October 1551, grants a Sasine to William Lauder of Haltoun, "whose father Sir Alexander Lauder of Haltoun had died in the Battle of Pinkie".
