Biography

Sir Andrew Lauder (later Lauder Dick) of Fountainhall, 5th Bt., was baptised 8th May 1702, and died 6th March 1769 being interred in Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh. He married in 1731 his cousin Isabel (2nd November 1716 – 7th November 1758) daughter and heiress of Sir William Leslie Dick of Grange, a descendant of the Plantagenets (b.1st June 1678, d.c1755), by his wife Ann Seton (1676 – 1764) daughter of Sir Alexander Seton of Pitmedden, 1st Bt. By this marriage Isabel, being her father's only surviving child and heiress , succeeded to the estate of the Grange, carrying it with her marriage to the Lauder family of baronets.

Andrew Lauder succeeded to the Lauder baronetcy in 1730 upon the death of his elder brother Sir Alexander Lauder, 4th Baronet. Sir Andrew Lauder, Bt., was made an Hon. Burgess of the Royal Burgh of Lauder (1 August 1737), and also of Musselburgh (8 June 1739).[1]

In the Dalrymple of North Berwick Muniments at the national archives there are letters dated from 12th February 1748 to 19th May 1757, from Sir Andrew Lauder of Fountainhall, one explaining that he suffers from melancholia hyponchondriaca, following news of the death of his son John in Spain in 1757.[2]

Following his wife’s death Sir Andrew Lauder assumed the additional surname of Dick and quartered his Arms. They had eighteen children.

Sir Andrew Dick Lauder, 5th Bt., and his wife Isobel Dick are interred in the Lauder family burial vault in Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh.[3]
