Henry Lascelles, second son of Edward Lascelles [1] and his wife, Anne Chaloner, was born on Christmas Day 1767 [2] and was baptised at Darrington with Wentbridge towards the end of January 1768. [3] He was educated at Harrow. [1]

On the 2nd of September 1794 at Flamstead in Hertfordshire he married Henrietta Sebright, [4] daughter of Sir John Saunders Sebright Bt., [1] and his wife, Sarah Knight. They were parents of 7 sons and 4 daughters. [1]

Henry's father was elevated to the peerage as Baron Harewood in 1796 and was created Viscount Lascelles and Earl of Harewood. [5] Henry himself was returned to Parliament as member for Yorkshire in 1796 and again in 1802. [6] In 1807 at a by-election he was returned for Westbury to replace his brother, Edward, who had chosen to sit for Northallerton. [7] In 1812 he again took the Yorkshire seat. [6]

In 1814 his elder brother, Edward, died and Henry began using his father;s courtesy title of Viscount Lascelles in Edward's place. [5]

In 1818 Henry was returned for Northallerton [8] and between 1819 and 1841 he also served as Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire. [9]

His father died on the 3rd of April 1820 whereupon Henry succeeded as Earl of Harewood, [1] giving up his seat in the House of Commons for one in the Lords. Among other things, the 1st Earl had inherited from a cousin two plantations in Jamaica and four in Barbados. Following the emancipation of slaves in British colonies in 1833 came the Slave Compensation Act of 1837. Henry received £26, 309 4s and 4d for 9911 slaves. [10]

Henry died on the 24th of November 1841 at Bramham in Yorkshire "just after returning from a run with the hounds." [11] He was buried at All Saints Church, Harewood on the 3rd of December. [12]
