Biography

This profile is part of the Lapham Name Study.
Stephen was a Friend (Quaker)

Stephen bought several hundred acres of heavily timbered land between Bay and Ridge Roads in Queensbury, NY, which he cleared and sold off for farms.[1] He died in a fall from the Friends Meeting House where he was shingling the roof.[1]

On 2d 4m 1777 [2 Apr 1777], he married Rachel Hussey of East Hoosick, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[2] The following excerpt is from the records of the Nine Partners monthly meeting:[2]

2nd day of 4th mo 1777.
Whereas Stephen Lapham & Rachel Hussey both of Easthoosuck in the county of Berkshier & province of Massachesets Bay in Newengland declared their intentions of taking each other in marriage before ...people called Quakers in the Ninepartners in the province of New York … and having consent of parents … ...they the sd Stephen Lapham and Rachel Hussey appeared in an assembly of the aforesaid people called Quakers met to gather at Isaac K?Helbys in easthouswick in the county of Berkshire …

Stephen and Rachel had several children. Among them were; Benjamin who married Lydia Langdon, daughter of Samuel and Jane Langdon, at Queensbury, NY, August 10, 1809.[citation needed] And a son, Henry G. Lapham, who married a woman named Martha.[citation needed] They were members of the Queensbury Monthly Meeting, Glens Falls, New York.[citation needed]

  1. Hephsiba, born 1779, died 1839; married Samuel Tucker
  2. Anna, born 1791, died 1871; married Abram Tucker
  3. Phebe, born 1783, died 1840; married Moses Tucker
  4. Benjamin, born 1789, died 1838; married Lydia Langdon
  5. Ruth, born 1790, died 1833; married Nathaniel B. Sisson
  6. Clarinda, born 1793, died 1881; married Ambrose Haight
  7. Jonathan, born 1798, died 1860; married Elizabeth S. Healy
  8. George, born 1799, died 1782; married Comfort Saunders

Stephen was noted as a member of the Easton monthly meeting, residing at Saratoga (meaning the Saratoga Patent) circa 1778.[3] Also noted was his wife Rachel.[3]

Stephen met the property requirements to vote in the senatorial elections of 1786 in Queensbury.[4]

I'm adding son George who may or may not be related to Henry P Lapham (abt.1840-1864) whose parents I've been looking for for a while... long story!

Henry is a Union soldier who died at Andersonville.
