W. G. Lanier.
Death of an Old and Widely Known Citizen.
Esq. William G. Lanier, who resided above Cotton Town, died Thursday and was buried yesterday at Friendship Church. Mr. Lanier was probably the oldest citizen in his section of the county, he having been ninety years old last January. He was a native of Davidson County but moved to Sumner in 1860. For a while he lived at Gallatin and was jailor here under Sheriff Hobdy. He was later a member of the county court, serving in that body a number of years. The deceased was a member of the Christian Church and had been a member of the Masons for a long number of years. He was a man of excellent character and had much influence in the community where he resided. He is survived by his wife and six children, one of whom is Dr. T. L. Lanier, of Portland.

William George Washington Lanier was born 5 Jan 1816 in Nashville, Davidson Co., N. The first record found of him so far is his marriage to Paulina Stogner on 16 Aug 1837 in Davidson Co. According to Clayton's History of Davidson Co., TN, William G. Lanier
was elected to served a six year term as Justice of the Peace in Davidson County in
1847. In 1854 he was elected to serve an additional six, year term. In 1850, William along with six other menformed the Brick Church Turnpike Company. The Twenty-Eighth General Assembly of the State of Tennessee awarded them a contract to build a graveled turnpike road north of Nashville. His wife, Paulina, died before 1855, leaving him with 5 young children. 2 Oct 1855, he married Lucinda F. Peay. In1860 he moved his family to Sumner Co., TN. He settled in Gallatin and became a jailer there under
Sheriff Hobdy. Later he moved above Cottontown. He farmed and was a member of
the county court for a number of years. He died 8 Nov 1905, two months before his 91st birthday, and is buried in Friendship Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Sumner Co., TN. His obituary states; "He was a man of excellent character and had much influence
