Biography

Birth

Robert A Lane of Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England is assumed to have been born about 1500, as he had grandchildren by 1542.[1]

Parents

NOTE: His parents are not known.[1][2] In some family trees, it is assumed that they were Richard Lane and Anne Harcourt. However there is no source for this, it is presumably based solely on last name and timing. In fact, Richard and Anne lived in Staffordshire not Hertfordshire, and their records to not indicate a son Robert.

Some popular genealogies show that Richard Lane had an additional son, Robert. No documentation has been found for such a son, and he has been de-linked.

Husbandman

Robert A Lane is identified in the Subsidy Rolls of 1524 and 1525. He was a husbandman.[1]

Will

His will was dated 4 July 1542 and proved 11 June 1543.[1][2]

In his will, he identifies daughters Annes Page and Margaret Thorpe, and his son and executor Thomas, as well as some of their family. He does not mention his wife.[1]

Children (based on his will):[1]

  • Thomas, married Alice, had daughter Elyne, was living in 1542.
  • Annes, married William Page, had son John, was living in 1542.
  • Margaret, married Edward Thorpe, had son John, was living in 1542.

Research Note

There is an Ancestry record for Robert Lane, buried 28 June 1543 in St Leonard, Lambeth, Surrey, England. However that is not the same person since this other Robert likely died late June if buried on 28 June, while the present Robert likely died in May or early June if his will was proved 11 June. Furthermore one was in Surrey and the other was in Hertfordshire.

I am a direct line of Robert Lane of Great Missenden and have researched the Lane name in England. As many with the ancestral name Lane have done, I researched the line of Richard Lane (Richard of Hide of Breward, Staffordshire) and Anne Harcourt , who had three sons, William 1485, Robert 1492, and John 1500, thinking I would find a link. I am absolutely convinced that unless the connection goes back to pre 13th century, there is no connection. Any documentation I have is embedded in 20 years of research and Lane History in my personal files so it is my personal conclusion. I searched and researched the origins of the family crests and the granting of the three lions bestowed on that line of Lanes to have on the Lane Family Crest, two of which I located. My research found no link of Robert Lane of Great Missenden to Sir Richard Lane. Lane is a common name in England and the Lane family of Staffordshire appear to be decedents of the De La Lane (Lone) lineage. Much is written and most is convoluted but good luck with further searching.
