Biography

Johann Heinrich Landmeyer was born on 11 Jun 1834 and baptized on 22 Jun 1834 in Schale Teckclenburg, Westfalen (now Germany), the son of Johann Gerhard Landmeyer and Margaretha Maria Hilner [1] or Hilker.

He came to the United States in September 1838. [2] In 1850 he was 16 years old and living with his parents and three siblings in Addison, DuPage, Illinois. The family was farming and the value of their real estate was $800. [3]

He married Henriette Everding [2] about 1855. [4] In 1870 he was a farmer living in Addison Township, DuPage, Illinois with Henriette, their four children, his parents, brother and a farmer helper and house servant. The value of their real estate was $10,000 and the value of their personal estate was $2000. [5]

In 1880 he was a 46 year old farmer, still living in Addison with Henrietta, their six children, his father and ten year old Edward Scharringhausen who was listed in the census as an adopted son. [6] Edward was the son of his sister Maria Adelheid (Landmeier) Scharringhausen who had died a couple of years earlier.

In 1900, he was a 65 year old farmer, living in Addison Township with his wife Henrietta, son Edwin and a 20 year old servant Bertha Hartke. The census noted that Henrietta had had eight children, six of whom were still living. [4]

In 1910, he had retired from farming, and he and Henrietta were listed next to their son Edwin in the census in Addison Township. [7]

In 1920, he was widowed and living with his son Edwin and his family. [8]

He died on 6 Dec 1920 in Bensenville, DuPage, Illinois, [9] and was buried at St. John's Cemetery in Bensenville, DuPage, Illinois. In the early 2010s his grave was moved to Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, DuPage, Illinois due to the expansion of O'Hare Airport. [10]
