Military Service, Civil War
John's military record on Fold3 contains the following information:
John enlisted in Company B, 30th Alabama Infantry.
John was taken prisoner after the Siege of Vicksburg. He was captured on July 4, 1863. He had been promoted to Corporal by this time.
John signed an oath of allegiance on July 8th, 1863, in order to be paroled. The oath was specific to the siege of Vicksburg, as it states, "being a prisoner of war, in the hands of the United States Forces, in virtue of the capitulation of the City of Vicksburg and its garrison."
A typical oath from this period, John agreed not to take up arms against the United States, nor serve in any military, police, or constabulary in any force, Garrison or field work, nor as guard of any prisons, depots or stores, nor discharge any duties normally performed by any Officers or soldiers, against the United States of America, until duly exchanged by the proper authorities.
John was later captured again at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. The pension file below indicates he was shot through the shoulder during this battle. He had been promoted to sergeant by this time.
John was sent to the military prison at Louisville, Kentucky, on January 14, 1864, "for exchange." However, on January 17, he was sent to the military prison at Rock Island, Illinois, where he arrived on January 20. Rock Island prison was located on a government-owned island between Davenport, Iowa, and Moline, Illinois.
There are no further records in the Fold3 file.[5]

John filed a pension application on May 29, 1891. Information from the file:
Enlisted March 5, 1862, in Company B, 30th Alabama Infantry Regiment, at Jacksonville, Alabama.
On November 27, 1863, he was shot through the left shoulder at Missionary Ridge, Tenn.
Wounds made him physically unable of making a livelihood by labor due to his occupation as a farmer. Has partial paralysis of the arm.
He was a resident of Alabama on Feb 13, 1891
Applied through Calhoun County, Ala.
Some of the forms in his application state that he was in Company C, 1st Alabama Regiment, however this is most likely an error. The state of Alabama Civil War database has no J Landers listed in the rolls of a 1st Alabama Regiment.
Owned no real estate; his property consisted of a clock, cow, calf and a few household items, worth a total of $54.00.
John refiled the application a number of times over the years. It is unclear whether it was denied, or he had to refile periodically to continue to receive a pension.[8]
