Biography

Norman was born on 18 May 1939 in Norfolk, Virginia, United States.^[1] He was the son of Norman Land and Evelyn Alston. In the 1950 census, Norman (age 10) was the son of Norman Land in Portsmouth, Virginia.^[2] Norman (age 16) married Mamie Orelia Harding (age 16) on 20 December 1954 in Portsmouth, Virginia, United States.^[3] They had two children together and divorced there on 5 December 1960.^[4] Norman married a second time. On 25 January 1962, he married Vera Williams in Chesapeake, Virginia. They had a daughter together, Kelly Nora Land, on 16 July 1965. Sadly, she died when she was eighteen months old, on 30 January 1967.^[5] After this, Vera and Norman divorced on 3 January 1968 in Chesapeake, Virginia, United States.^[6] Norman died (age 36) in June 1975.^[7][8]

• There are a number of discrepancies between records about Norman's birthdate. His father was also called Norman Dornell Land and there are a lot of discrepancies about his birthdate and well. Use caution when figuring out who is who.
• It is not 100% certain that one of Norman's parents is actually his parent. His birth record is a delayed record and it doesn't list the name of either parent. His mother, Evelyn, was still single and living with her family in the 1940 census. It would make sense that if Norman was hers that he'd be with her then since he would be less than a year old. Norman's father, Norman, has not been found in the 1940 census and Norman and Evelyn only married in February of 1941. The marriage record says that Norman was in the Navy so perhaps he was onboard a ship when the census occurred. Either way, this needs more research.
• Records have not yet been found for Norman's two children with Mamie but they are probably still alive.
• A marriage record for Norman and Vera still needs to be found. A birth record for Kelly still needs to be found. An actual death certificate needs to be found for Norman.
• During research, Kelly's death certificate was found and she had a particularly ugly death for a child so young. There should be newspaper records about it but they need to be found.
