Esau Lamb was born in 1734 in Nansemond County, VA. He was married to Elizabeth Newby (daughter of Samuel Newby Sr. and Elizabeth Albertson) on 4 May 1757 in Piney Woods, Perquimans, NC. At the Pasquotank Monthly Meeting the children of Esau(e) and Elizabeth Lamb are named along with dates of birth for daughters Dorcas, Miriam, Ruth and son Joseph.
On 3 July 1765 they requested a certificate for the family to leave the Perquimans County monthly meeting to join the monthly meeting in adjoining Pasquotank County, where they resided until October 16, 1766, at which time he requested, and was granted, a certificate to move to the Center Monthly Meeting in Greensboro, Guilford County.
Randolph County, 1779 Tax List, "Persons that had not taken the Oath of Allegiance, refusing or neglecting to return Inventories of their taxables, Joseph Hinds District.... Esau Lamb."
Elizabeth Newby was born on 30 Oct 1738 in Symons Creek, Pasquotank, NC. The record also reflects this about her father: "Samuel Newby, Sr., a worthy minister many years, died 12-16-1770."Sources, Hinshaw, Vol I, NC, p. 57 (Perquimans MM) and pp. 101, 103, 108, 144 (Pasquotank MM).
He died on 8 Mar 1790 in Randolph County, NC, leaving Elizabeth as a widow. His death was reported by the Quakers of Guilford County in the Center Monthly Meeting, Hinshaw, Vol I, NC, p.660, even though his will was filed and probated in adjoining Randolph County Jun 1790 at Asheboro, NC.
Last Will & Testament of Esau Lamb, son of Henry
"Be it remembered that I Esau Lamb of the County of Randolph in the State of North Carolina being sick and weak in body, yet through mercy of a Sound and Perfict understanding and Memory do Constatute and ordain this my Last Will and Testament and Desire it may received by all as such, first and Princapally I recommend my soul to God who gave it, and my body to the Earth to be Buried in a Deceant and Christian like maner at the Discression of my Executors hereafter named, And as touching my Worldly Estate and effects with which it hath pleased God to Bless me with in this Life, I give Devise Bequeath and Dispose of in the following manner and form.
“First, my Will and Desire is that all my just Debts be paid. I give and Bequeath to Elizabeth my Dear and Loving Wife all my Estate both Real and Personal, Goods and Chattels, both within doors and without, for her support and maintainance and the bringing up of my Children during her natural life, Item, I give and Devise to my two sons Josiah Lamb and Joseph Lamb and to their Heirs and assigns forever all Lands and Plantation whereon I now live to be possessed by them equally share and share alike after my Wifes Death.
“Item, I give devise and bequeath all my Personal Estate that may be remaining after my Wifes Decease unto my Children, (viz) Miriam the Wife of John Lamb and Ruth the Wife of Stephen Presnell and my sons Josiah and Joseph and my Daughter Elizabeth, to be equally Devided between them, and lastly I do hereby Nominate Constatute and appoint my Wife Elizabeth with my Sons in Law John Lamb and Stephen Presnell Executors of this my Last Will and Testament by Disalowing and Revoking all other Wills and Bequeathments by me heretofore made and other Executors by me Named--- Rattifying and Confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this Twenty Third Day of the Ninth Month in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty eight. Signed Sealed Published and Declared by the within testator the said Esau Lamb to be his Last Will and Testament in the presence of us who subscribed our names in the presence of the said Testator. Jeremiah Reynolds, Jacob Lamb, Tomas Lamb. Signed Esau (x) Lamb"
Esau's will was proven during the June 1790 term of the Randolph County NC court by Jacob and Tomas Lamb. The original will is located in the N.C. State Archives, Raleigh, with notation "recorded in Book A, page 80, 1788"
Esau Lamb and Elizabeth Newby had the following children:
i. Dorcas Lamb
ii. Miriam Lamb was born on 12 Dec 1762 in Symons Creek, Pasquotank, NC. She was married to John Lamb before 1788 in Randolph County, NC. The will of Esau Lamb names John Lamb as his son-in-law and the husband of his daughter Miriam Lamb. Otherwise, John's relationship to others of the Lamb surname is not known.
iii. Ruth Lamb was born on 20 Jul 1764 in Symons Creek. She was married to Stephen Presnall (son of Jacob Presnall) before 1790. The will of Esau Lamb names Stephen Presnell as his son-in-law and the husband of his daughter Ruth.
iv. Joseph Lamb was born on 2 Aug 1767 in Symons Creek. He died between 1831 and 1839 in Randolph County, NC.
