Biography

JOHN3 LALOR (DANIEL2, JOHN1) was born 05 Dec 1822 in Dublin, Ireland, and died 13 Jun 1890 in St Marys, NSW.

He married SARAH HOWARD 1840 in Roscrea, Ireland, daughter of THOMAS HOWARD and ANN PLATT. She was born 1821 in Shrinrone, Queens County, Ireland, and died 08 Feb 1891 in St Mary Magdalene, St Marys.

JOHN LALOR: He was brought up by his maternal grandparents and, except in the army, seems to have had surprisingly little contact with his family, even with George who for many years lived near him at Bark Huts and later near St Marys.

John came to Australia from India, where he had been in the army.He served in the 84th Regiment of Foot, regimental No 1904. Joined at Limerick Castle, Ireland on 31 August, 1841.

In the constabulary register of NSW Police Department, John could read and write, ride a horse, had brown hair, grey eyes and a sallow complexion. He was appointed an ordinary constable on 1/11/1854, a Sergeant on 25/2/1855 and was reduced to Constable for "irregular conduct" on 31/3/1855. He absconded, then rejoined, but on 27/9/1857 he was dismissed.

Corporal Robert Martin was Godfather to Corporal John Lalor's children at Secundarbad and Tiruchirapalli in India. He was given a free discharge to Australia in 1854 and came to Australia with 38 others of the Queens 84th Regiment of Foot.

John Lalor and Robert Martin and their families probably came to Australia together. His wife agreed to foster his children by his Indian mistress. The family descendants have olive skin and brown eyes.
