Biography

John Kevin Ladley was born on 5th August 1924 in Ipswich. [1] He was the son of John Ladley and Alice Neale. [2]

He was educated at Blair State School, Ipswich until age 14. He passed the State Scholarship Examination in December 1938. He attended Boys’ Grammar School, Ipswich from ages 14 to 16, but did not obtain his Junior Certificate in November 1940. [1]

In 1942, he served the first year (of five years) as an Apprentice Moulder in Iron and Brass to A G Sutton, Ipswich. In November 1942, he passed his First Year Apprenticeship Examination with Honours (General Science, Trade Drawing and Sketching, Trade Maths.) [1]

He lived with his parents at 41 O’Sullivan Street, Woodend, Ipswich.[1] He played football, and enjoyed mountain climbing. [1] He took a keen interest in the Boy Scout movement.[3]

On 5th March 1943 at the No.3 Recruiting Centre, Creek Street, Brisbane, he enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force. He was 18 years and 7 months of age, 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighed 141 pounds, and had a fair complexion, blue-grey eyes and brown hair. He had some distinctive tattoos and scars. He gave his religious denomination as Methodist.[1]

Flight Sergeant J. K. Ladley was killed on 11th November 1944 during air operations over Dortmund, Germany. His funeral took place at noon on 15th November 1944 in the Royal Air Force Regional Cemetery, Cambridge.[1][4][5]
