The name is first recorded for Hugh de Lacy; his sons, Walter and Ilbert, left Normandy and traveled to England with William the Conqueror. [1] Ellis suggests that the father of Ilbert and Walter was named Hugh, "for each gave this name to a son". [2]
The Chronique de Normandie, based on le Roman de Rou, names "le sire de Lacy" (twice) among those who took part in the conquest of England in 1066[2], which could refer to Ilbert de Lacy and his father or to Ilbert and his supposed brother Walter.
His widow Emma granted 22 acres of land at Montmain in Normandy to the Nunnery of St. Amand by "Emma, the mother of Ilbert de Lacy". She was described as such to distinguish her from the Abbess of St. Amand by the same name. [4]
Research Notes
Hugh de Lacy's first name may not have been Hugh. Further research is needed to determine that the first name was indeed HUGH.
"Any proof that the original de Lacy in pre-Norman Conquest France was named Hugh (or Hughes, as they would have spelled it). I know that many people have given his name as Hugh de Lacy, but, while I know that he had a grandson and further descendants named Hugh, I have been able to find no documentation that the original de Lacy was named Hugh".
